Seeing fields brimming with yellow oil seed rape in North Nottinghamshire, and works by colourfield painters such as Ellesworth Kelly and Barnett Newman, I recognised the capacity of a single area of colour, and the consuming effects this can have on our senses. Whilst the scale of such paintings contributed to their impact, my smaller scale, three-dimensional explorations have significant effect. On the smooth curved internal surface, devoid of corner or internal edge, the intense colour floats, seemingly up and over the rim, like a gas; the depth of the form ambiguous and the whole form becomes a conundrum.
